Via the Community Campus in Portsmouth, New Hampshire April 2002 -
sponsored by The Music Hall
During the month of April 2002 I had the pleasure to be part of a community outreach program sponsored by The Music Hall. Their vision was to have a grammy award winning artist The Junk Man come and perform at the hall as well as reach out to as many of the community as possible by creating instruments out of found objects and sound sculptures to continue the process.
We made musical instruments with recycled goods brought into the Community Campus and to Little Harbor School and Dondero School. We had over 300 participants making the pieces ranging from age 2 to adult. We created xylophones, maracas, sand blocks, digeredoos, small drums, hand blocks, rain sticks and shakers from the varied recylables which came to our boxes! The pieces were finished in a beautiful artistic way with each of the participants knowing that they were working cooperatively to make something which would be used by children in each of the schools and at the Campus. The ownership was given up for the group and yet the pride of workmanship was in each piece. We were able to finish these in a manner which made them long lasting as well as something beautiful to behold. Our final presentation was a performance at the Music Hall at the beginning of the Junk Mans performance in May 2002.
