] As an architect I can say that this type of renovation and use, such as the gallery, of an older building is something we always hope can take place. What a beautiful job they have done. [

This is a very welcome addition to downtown Rochester.

It was love at first sight. We walked into 56 North Main St. in December 2002 and knew this is where the future home of artstream would be. All the windows were boarded up, the place was dirty and full of junk (14 tons!!) the walls had 11 different colors of paint (we counted) and the bathrooms were beyond repair. But, we saw the potential to make the building come alive again. The incredible tin ceiling was in perfect condition and the windows were high enough to let in light and hang artwork underneath. There was a wood floor under the old carpeting; the bead boards on the walls were in decent shape,
and there was exposed brick in the back. The best part was opening the back door to hear the wonderful sound of the Cocheco River and see the rushing falls. The renovation took 2 months, but it was well worth it and we are thrilled with the results.
The building was built in 1901 and was initially a grocery store. It later became Ayers & Jenkins hardware store and then for the last few decades was Tee Pee Sports Store. The building is rich in history and we are happy to be a part of its future.
